About Caterpillar Inc.
Caterpillar is an American company that focuses on the design, development, manufacturing, marketing, and sale of engines, machinery, financial products, and insurance. With over 100,000 employees situated across the globe, Caterpillar operates as a Fortune 100 corporation with their various operations.
Caterpillar can trace its history back to the early 1900s when steam tractors were facing difficulties while attempting to farm in the San Joaquin Valley Delta. With the heavy weight of such tractors, they would often sink into the earth. To solve this problem, Benjamin Holt began developing a series of tractors that would not sink, and it was in 1911 when Holt purchased the patent to an England designed tractor that relied on steel plate-tracking. In 1907, Holt improved the design with a practical continuous track, and three years later he opened his first plant in Illinois.
During World War I, Holt’s track-type tractors served a support role as well as were fitted with weapons so that they could act as an artillery tractor. After the war, however, the company struggled and Holt eventually passed away in 1920. Soon after, Thomas A. Baxter assumed leadership of the company and refocused operations to center on smaller tractor models that were geared towards the agricultural market. After fierce competition from the company C. L. Best, the two entities merged in 1925 to form the Caterpillar Tractor Co.
Over the following decades, Caterpillar continued their focus on tractors, introducing new series and technologies throughout the years. Leading into the 2000s, Caterpillar has also carried out international expansion as they established facilities in numerous countries such as Russia, China, Brazil, and India. Additionally, Caterpillar has also expanded through various acquisitions that they have conducted leading into the present.
