The altimeter encoder is a device that provides a pilot with indication of the aircraft’s altitude above mean sea level. It is typically in the form of a 3 ⅛” dial with multiple pointers denoting the altitude. The indicator is typically located in the top row of instruments near the center of the panel. In a standard instrument configuration, the altimeter is found next to the attitude gyroscope. There are three altimeter encoder types: three-point, counter drum, and encoding. The three-point altimeter is the most common one in general aviation. It is named for its three points, each of which displays altitude in a different increment. The counter drum altimeter features a stationary pointer and a rotating drum that displays the digits to denote the altitude. The encoding altimeter can be either of the first two types, but features a built-in module that takes the altitude information and converts it into a digital code that is sent to the aircraft transponder.
